Detroit People Mover Celebrates 30 Years of Serving the Community
- Free rides on Monday, July 31
- Over 65 million passenger trips during the system’s history
On Monday the public can enjoy free rides all day on the People Mover and samples of Detroit Water Ice from Noon to 2:00 p.m. as part of “DPM Anniversary Day.”
Free Detroit Water Ice will be available at the Grand Circus Park and Financial District Stations. Patrons will also have a chance to try a specially-blended “Mover Mystery Flavor” (while supplies last) and have an opportunity to name the inspired treat via Twitter @DetPeopleMover #DETPeopleMover30.
The Detroit People Mover opened for service on July 31, 1987 as part of the downtown economic revival at the time and is part of the current public transportation network in Southeast Michigan. Over 65 million trips have been taken since the People Mover’s inception, as the elevated, automated trains support downtown businesses, tourism, special and major league sports team events as well as the growing residential and employer populations.
For the Detroit Transportation Corporation, 30 years of Detroit People Mover (DPM) operations represents continued opportunities in a growing, vibrant downtown and renewing connections with local communities.
