Youmacon Attendees Choose the People Mover This Weekend

Unlimited ride passes, extended hours, safe & convenient service

DETROIT // November 3// Riding the People Mover is the one of the best people-watching points for Youmacon, the  largest Japanese pop culture convention in the country.  Thousands of participants are meeting up to appreciate, celebrate and participate in the worlds of anime gaming, comics and animation from Thursday, Nov. 3 through Sunday, Nov. 6.

Hosting the annual Youmacon convention is always a great time in downtown Detroit. Why? Youmacon celebrates its epic fan base of cosplayers  or “costumed players” who show up as their favorite characters to enjoy music, celebrities and activities. Ranging from the creative to the elaborate, the gathering highlights both the easily recognizable (think Sonic, Transformers) to those who have a more international following. The interpretations are the epitome of individual expression and a treat for the eyes.

Event founder Morgan Kollin uses programming (and a well-maintained website, social media and fan forum) to stay connected to 18,000 expected attendees. Whether exploring for the day or the entire four-day weekend, events are taking place on a 24-hour schedule that covers every interest.  Video games, a dealer’s room for unique memorabilia, and things to do – including an annual costume ball, tournaments, concerts and a “maid-café” – offer options that demonstrate that Kollin and his team are connected to the latest in the culture and the desires of their audience.

Okay, back to why the People Mover is the place to be for Youmacon.

1. SEE & BE SEEN.  With direct connections to the main venues of Cobo Center and the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center hotel, everyone who rides has an opportunity to show creativity. With heated trains and arrival times approximately every four minutes, there’s little need to cover up (but be practical – if going outside, consider warm outerwear).  For our regular passengers, please note that the additional patrons will fill up the trains almost non-stop, but for some crowding and great visuals, the personalities of this happy group will reward your patience. Also: November 3 is the first day – which is free and open to the public.

2. DPM PASSES ARE THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING. Take unlimited People Mover rides for one low price, pass holders just swipe and go…and go and go. It’s true – in 2015 Youmacon had 18,000 participants – and the People Mover had 88,210 trips over the extended weekend.  Working with Youmacon for the last few years has made it possible to offer these passes in person in the registration area. So, if you don’t order online, or can’t ask someone where they bought it – you can get one, no worries. Check back for the schedule or follow us on Twitter @detpeoplemover.

3. CONVENIENCE & SAFETY Convenience and safety is the third reason, but at the top of our list.  Transit Police will be in the system riding, patrolling stations and assisting with crowd control.  Emergency call buttons are also located on every train and each of our 13 stations for additional assistance.

Extended service hours will allow visitors to move freely, however, we ask that our passengers observe the following courtesies:

  • Stay behind the yellow safety line at each platform. Trains are automated and will not stop until they reach the station, no matter how cool you’re dressed.
  • The People Mover honors the policies of both Youmacon and Cobo (please review); for your safety, no playing with props or weapons is allowed aboard the train or in the system.
  • Do NOT hold open of the train doors. Forcing the doors to re-open repeatedly to let your three friends jump on may cause problems such as a service delay.  To avoid having hundreds of people mad at you, text a meet-up or wait a few minutes for the next train.
  • Remain aware while riding. Notice your surroundings. While we have announcements for the stations, overuse of electronic devices may cause you to miss the view, overlook a senior citizen or handicapped person who may need to use the accessibility seating or leave something behind.

That’s it. Here’s some additional information. See you aboard!
