New Place, New Partnership
Detroit Transportation Corporation and SMART team to offer
one-stop location for People Mover passes
DETROIT, Mich. (11/13/2013) –The Detroit People Mover (DPM) is branching out – making the system more accessible to a growing number of downtown residents, workers and visitors.
The DTC Administrative office recently moved from 1420 Washington Boulevard to Suite 400 of the Buhl Building at 535 Griswold – the same location as the SMART Transit Center, and one block north of the DPM Financial District Station.
Beginning Monday, November 18, the People Mover’s monthly and annual passes can be purchased at the SMART Downtown Detroit Transit Center. The center will sell the most current passes, allowing customers to buy fare cards for the People Mover, SMART and DDOT (via the Regional Transit Pass) – at a single location.
People Mover passes allow for unlimited rides during their use period. Monthly DPM passes are $10 and annual passes are $100.
“The opportunity to offer the convenience of purchasing People Mover passes at the SMART Transit Center brings our service closer to coordinated access,” said Barbara Hansen, Detroit Transportation Corporation (DTC) General Manager.
“Bringing our transit resources together benefits everyone,” said John Hertel, General Manager of SMART. “With our partnership, a small, but significant first step has been taken to improve customer service for transit riders who understand the importance of an integrated transit system. SMART will continue to find new ways to make riding public transit seamless.”
Reduced fare passes for senior citizen and disabled patrons, as well as bulk tokens – must still be purchased directly from the DTC. Monthly passes are also available at the Rosa Parks Transit Center.
Detroit People Mover was constructed in 1987 as part of a planned, regional transportation system. Fare is 75 cents per ride. Any combination of U.S. nickels, dimes and quarters or one DPM token may be used for entry. Tokens are available in all DPM stations. Children, ages five and under ride free. The DPM system is accessible to elderly and disabled persons, with the exception of Grand Circus Park Station (stairway access only).
Serving since 1967, SMART is Southeast Michigan’s only regional public transportation provider, offering convenient, reliable and safe transportation for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. SMART’s Fixed-Route and small bus services connect people to employment and educational institutions. SMART is supported by federal and state funding, local contributions through a transit property tax millage from opt-in communities and bus fares.
