Your Detroit Story

“Tell us a little about who you are and what first inspired you to invest your energy in Detroit’s community.”

I’ve spent my career working at the intersection of business, development, and civic leadership, and what first inspired me to invest my energy in Detroit was the spirit and resilience of the community and the opportunity to make a real difference. I was drawn to invest my energy in Detroit because I believe cities are defined not only by their buildings and businesses, but also by how people come together to create opportunity and belonging. For me, Downtown is the heart of that story. Being part of the Downtown Detroit Partnership has allowed me to bring together public, private, and philanthropic partners to reimagine what’s possible and to continue building a city where everyone feels they have a stake in its success.

Transportation in Downtown: Then & Now

“In your experience, how has transportation in Downtown Detroit evolved over the years, and what role do you see the People Mover playing in that change?”

From a city once built around the automobile to one that is now embracing a more connected, multimodal future, transportation in Downtown Detroit has evolved tremendously over the years. We’ve seen investments in bike share, scooters, expanded pedestrian-friendly public spaces, and soon, new regional transit connections. Throughout this change, the People Mover has played a steady and symbolic role. It was ahead of its time when it opened, and today it continues to serve as a vital connector by linking our cultural, entertainment, and business  districts – making it even more accessible with its zero-fare program. More than just a transit option, it represents our commitment to innovation, accessibility, and making Downtown easy to navigate for everyone who lives, works, and visits here.

Favorite Spot Along the People Mover

“Which station or nearby spot along the People Mover route do you love most, and what makes it special to you?”

The People Mover Grand Circus Park station holds a special place in my heart  because it represents both history and hope for Detroit. It sits at the intersection of our city’s culture, entertainment, and everyday life. The station connects people to our parks, theaters, ballparks, and neighborhoods. For me, it’s more than a transit stop; it’s a symbol of movement, of bringing people together, and of how Downtown continues to evolve as a place where everyone belongs.

Hopes & Dreams for Detroit

“When you think about Detroit’s future, what’s one message or aspiration you’d share with the community?”

Let’s continue to build on our legacy of resilience and innovation so that people from all over the world see Detroit as the Great American City that redefined what it means to be connected, inclusive, and thriving; where Downtown is not only the center of mobility and innovation but also where people of all backgrounds come to live, work, play, and celebrate the spirit of Detroit.

Fun Finale: Ride with Anyone
“If you could ride the Detroit People Mover with anyone—past or present—who would it be, and why?”

My parents — my mom was a Presbyterian minister who would feel right at home with the diversity of city life represented through the People Mover system, and my father, who would ride in great delight over the transformation of our downtown – there are no better venues to embrace and celebrate Detroit's progress.
